The Murray River
The world's longest navigable river, the Murray River, forms the border between New South Wales and Victoria before heading south through South Australia to the ocean. Unwind and enjoy the region's renowned slow food, wine, golf courses and temperate climate.
At home on the water
Explore the Murray and Darling rivers as captain of your own houseboat. Houseboats are available for hire from Mildura and Wentworth and some include on-board spas, fishing equipment, canoes, and barbecues. Other popular aquatic activities include cruises on historic paddle steamers, swimming at a river beach, or waterskiing.
Riverside golf
The Murray is a golfing destination famous for its courses, mild climate and favourable conditions that allow year-round golf.
Food and wine
Sample locally grown citrus fruits, stone fruits, grapes, vegetables, olives and nuts. Savour soft cheeses, home-made prosciutto and famous fortified wines. Stock up at farm gates, farmers' markets, cellar doors and delicatessens, or dine in al fresco cafés, on scenic river cruises or at food and wine festivals.
Mildura is the also home of celebrity restaurateur Stefano de Pieri. His restaurant Stefano's is located in the cellar of the Grand Hotel in Mildura where local Murray produce is used to prepare dishes in the regional style of Stefano's birthplace in Northern Italy. Book for a five-course set menu that changes daily, subject to the whim of the chef and the seasonal produce available.
Unique environments
Wander along the Murray and see magnificent river red gums, birds and wildlife along Kings Billabong Nature Trail.
Murray towns
A thriving modern city, Albury Wodonga, is a charming mix of stately heritage buildings and tree lined streets, and nearby Rutherglen is one of Australia's oldest wine growing areas.
Once Australia's largest inland port, Echuca-Moama is now a stunning tourist and paddle steamer precinct. Further east, Shepparton has an international reputation for quality fruit and dairy products.
