Start your trip by flying from Melbourne direct to Albury and follow the Murray River's serpentine path from the mountains of the Great Dividing Range in northeast Victoria, to the desert country and the open plains of South Australia.
Day 1 - Albury Wodonga - Echuca-Moama
- Distance:
- 235 km
- Highlights:
- The town of Wodonga, a major inland centre that, with its sister city Albury, straddles the Murray River at the Victoria-New South Wales state border. Wodonga is popular with water sports enthusiasts for its close proximity to both the river and the capacious Lake Hume.
- Head east to the river's source and Corryong, the town where the Man from Snowy River legend was born. Further down the road is the famous wine centre, Rutherglen, renowned for its mild climate which produces robust red wines, along with famous muscats and tokays.
- Half an hour downstream is Yarrawonga-Mulwala. Fish for Murray cod, improve your golf handicap at the largest public-access golf course in Australia, water ski, or just relax on the banks of Lake Mulwala.
- End your day at Echuca-Moama, scenic heritage river towns, home to the world's largest fleet of operating paddle steamers and dotted with cafés, shops and restaurants. Enjoy a relaxing cruise aboard one of the authentic paddle steamers or a take a leisurely stroll on a self guided tour of the Echuca wharf.
Day 2 - Echuca-Moama - Swan Hill
- Distance:
- 155 km
- Highlights:
- Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading off on another day's adventure along the mighty Murray. Half an hour from Echuca is Barmah State Forest, Barmah Wetlands and the biggest stand of river red gums on earth. A haven for native animals and birdlife, the area has much to offer.
- Swan Hill is a town with a rich colonial past. A must visit is Pioneer Settlement, a port town re-creation. If you like a swing of golf, there are quality golf courses around Swan Hill, as well as great water skiing and fishing.
- The quintessential Murray experience can be had on a houseboat. Houseboat hire is available at Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura and Wentworth, with sleek vessels offering all the mod cons for solo sailors or groups.
Day 3 - Swan Hill - Mildura
- Distance:
- 267 km
- Highlights:
- The journey from Swan Hill to Mildura takes you from river bushland to a stunning desert environment.
- Mildura is an oasis beside the magnificent Murray where you can stroll along the riverbanks, fish, water-ski or cruise its wide waters on an historic paddle steamer. The Murray provides a stunning backdrop to the region's restaurants and wineries.
- The Murray-Sunset National Park is a stunning park comprising four distinct wilderness zones - billabongs near the Murray River, native pine woodlands, red sand dunes and saltbush flats. See seasonal wildflowers, abundant bird life, red kangaroos, breathtaking sunsets and the Pink Lakes, which turn a vivid colour in late summer.
- Continue your journey into South Australia and Adelaide by car or you can fly out of Mildura's regional airport with services to Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. Flying time is approximately one hour. Coach travel and train links are also available to major cities.
